Can I afford it?

SwVCC's distance courses are surprisingly less expensive than might be expected.  Our tuition is well below that of any four-year university and our credits are transferable.  A small investment now can deliver future dividends both financial and personal.

Tuition Costs

Tuition and related costs are set by the State Board for Community Colleges and are subject to change.  The comprehensive current tuition rate for the 2005-2006 academic year is:

  • Virginia In-State Tuition per credit hour: $81.65

  • Out-of-State Tuition per credit hour:  $256.80

The rates above include the following:

1.  A student comprehensive fee of $1.50 is charged per credit hour for credit classes and non-credit courses.  The purpose of this fee is to provide support for the college student government activities and events and parking auxiliary.

2.  A technology fee is charged at the rate of $3.15 per credit hour that will be used to finance major improvements in information technology at the college.  The funds will be used along with revenue from additional sources to implement a program of technology improvements designed to improve the use of technology in delivering instructional and student support services.

3.  For out-of-state students only, a capital fee of $3.00 per credit hour is charged for all credit courses.  This includes out-of-state students associated with distance learning, third party contract, or reciprocity agreement.

To calculate the cost of a specific number of credit hours for a given semester or view rates for out-of-state contract students, please view the tuition and fee chart.  A full listing of fees, tuition waivers and other related information can be found at the Southwest Virginia Community College Admissions Office.

Financial Aid

Students enrolled in Distance and Distributed Learning courses are eligible for financial aid just as students enrolled in traditional classroom courses.  To view the requirements for receiving Federal/State financial aid and download the appropriate forms, please visit the Financial Aid Office.
